HAROLD Wanyama became the first Ugandan to win the East Africa chess championship two years in a row at Lugogo during the Easter weekend.

He edged out one of Uganda’s most experienced players Bob Bibasa in a controversial and highly contested eighth and final round.

Wanyama was tied in joint first position with surprise package Patrick Kawuma at 6.5 points, but edged out the and junior champion on the Reinhard Bucholz’s tie break.

On his way to victory, Wanyama downed Stephen Bwire, Ivan Meri, Fred Okiring, Atwooli Akello, Rajab Kamoga and Bibasa.

He drew with Kenya’s Nathan Ateka and lost only once to Kawuma in a second round game that was billed as the biggest upset of the tournament.
