The top chess story of 2007 will be the USCF elections.

The US chess scene has always had the potential to have a large impact on society’s culture both nationally and worldwide. A substantial increase in the population of US chess players could mean that that potential could finally be realized.

The second surprise story will be the impact of the blogosphere on the elections. This influence will be disproportionate to the influence of blogs in the rest of the nation’s culture and politics because there is less media attention to chess affairs. Consumers of news will have to rely on the blogs disproportionately.

Susan Polgar jumped out front early in this area in 2006. Yet her blog is limited by an inability to save important posts in an easily accessible area. Hence, her important statements will get lost in the avalanche of content she produces for her site.

The biggest surprise to me in this area so far, was that her chief critic Sam Sloan’s failed to set up a rival blog to effectively challenge hers. (He has a web site but it is terribly ineffective and marred by over-emphasis on lawsuits.) Sloan has so far relied on posts in the USCF forums and in rec.chess.politics type groups instead. The disadvantage to this approach has been his lack of control of the content on these sites.

Assuming these trends to continue, the net result will be that Susan will go into the elections with a big advantage over her opponents, though not as big as is possible.

Footnote: Also ran story of 2007: the World Championship. Chess competitions should normally take precedence over chess politics, but this year the potential for good or bad is so great, I make an exception to my normal priorities.

I’m eagerly awaiting FIDE’s “change for the better,” as Bessel Kok’s involvement certainly bodes well.

I myself attended the GMA’s World Cup event in Brussels, in 1987, as a journalist. No corners were cut, as players and journalists alike were treated to every amenity imaginable, in this superbly organized happening (granted, his then-assistant, Angela Day, played an important part and so should likewise be given credit for its success).

It’s my opinion that Kok has a genuine respect for the world’s top players–which is to say, they’ll be well taken care of, for this reason alone. Moreoever, Kok’s professionalism and business acumen would preclude that his reputation be tarnished by a job poorly done.

Time will tell, but I think FIDE’s future looks very bright, indeed.

my suggestions… (but please take me not that serious ^^)

the one and only chess story:
Vladimir Kramnik is recognized to be the undisputed Chess World Champion, after winning the Mexico City FIDE WCC tournament…

        the biggest possible story:
        aliens landing in china …
(the caliber of the story will not depend on the aliens themselves,of course, but on the surprising fact, that they decided to land in china and not in wyoming …)

        the greatest possible story:
Kasparov decides to return to tournament chess, because Dr. Emanuel Lasker – cloned a few years ago by german nationalists who did not realize the jewish roots of Dr. Lasker – does not accept Kramnik or Topalov as real contenders for his own chess crown.

        the most confusing story:
both, GM’s Topalov and Kramnik, were found guilty to abuse an innocent UTP-5 cable, primary designed for internet transmission of chess moves and chess cheating, for sexual harassment of an attendent.

        the most incredible story:
amateur chess is still on the march …

        ^^

Carlsen moving above 2700 would not be great news. Winning the world championship would be. He will likely do the first but not the second.

My ideas for the best story for 2007…Bobby Fischer announces he will challenge the World Champion who wins in Mexico City 2007 to prove once and for all that he’s the greatest chess player in history.

The Polgar sisters challenge Deep Fritz to a match. 3 GMs against one computer. (I’d like to see this one.) Tsk! GM Susan Polgar…how about this one?!

Boy – I hate listening to myself ‘talk’; it’s New Year’s Eve – what the h*ll:

        1. After incontrovertible, mounting evidence builds to support the cheating charges, Kramnik is stripped of his ‘title’, and banned from professional Chess for life; (this has NEVER happened before, and hopefully never WILL happen again)

        2. While I’m not sure if it’s Fischer’s ‘time’ (he only comes out of ‘hiding’ when he needs money), Fischer plays an exhibition match against Karpov in Chess 960 (entirely financed by Karpov’s backers); the match is drawn.

        3. Susan Polgar wins the U.S. Championship; I LIKE this one; as I see it, the only person she needs to deal with is Kamsky, and even though it’s certainly a crapshoot – he CAN be dealt with by a top player (like Susan) with the proper choice of openings and the proper preparation.

        4. I agree that Carlson RISES to the level of WC competition, and goes down in non-ignonomous defeat. This is really a win-win situation for him.

        5. Another worldwide scandal brews, when a young player starts defeating all the ‘money players’ at tournaments, and then has his (her) career hampered and sabotaged by the ‘powers that be’ in the worldwide Chess community. There’s my ‘unfounded’ prediction on the list (all the others have ‘foundation’).

        Yuk, yuk.
Hey – Happy New Year, to all those that read this stuff. I mean it, and I even wish happy new year to those that try to dominate the blogs with inflamatory and derogative remarks. Hey – it’s only New Year’s once per year.

Let’s get back to ‘business’ next week!

FIDE ethics committee gives Topalov a ban or censor for his remarks.

Anand wins at Mexico City and Kramnik wants a Match with Anand.

Carlsen does very well in Mexico City.

Kasparov dies of unknown causes. Putin says he had nothing to do with it.

Kirsan Ilumzinov is elected President for life and given full dictatorial powers.

Topalov fires Danailov in fire storm. Danailov reveals all kinds of private dirt on Topalov. Vesilin fires back with nasty charges that Danailov was a double agent for the KGB and Kramnik.

Russ Limbaugh says he has been advising Danailov for years.

Famous brain surgeon announces new silicon computer chip implants to help patients think more clearly.

Reuters News Service was waiting to interview the famous brain surgeon when Vesilin Topalov was seen leaving the doctor’s office.

2007 will be a quiet year on the chess scene.

Kramnik befriends Mike Tyson, converts to Islam, reveals that Putin helped him cheat in the last world championship against Topalov, gives up his title to Topalov, leaves chess for politics, joins forces with Kasparov against Putin to help rid his conscience of the guilt of cheating.

Kasparov desides that politics isn’t so interesting afterall, leaves Kramnik to battle Putin alone, tries playing professional scrabble (in Russian) and reveals that he had a 4-year crush on a certain top female player (who he refuses to name)

Pentala Harikrishna marries Koneru Humpy in an elaborate Indian wedding ceremony, Sofia Leko defeats Aruna Anand in the final of the 1st Super-GM wives tourney finishing with a 1040 performance rating, Magnus Carlsen quits chess for championship roller-skating, and Bobby Fischer fathers triplets by an Icelandic 18-year old

Wake up to reality guys/gals. The news of 2007 will be a wakeup call for the fans of Carlsen: he will continue the downslide in ratings that has already started (refer to the latest January, 2007 FIDE list). The artificial bubble will at last burst.

Anand wins in Mexico. He deserves it.

        Topalov continues his downward spiral.

Putin dies mysteriously. Kasparov denies any involvement.

Everyone finally realises how efficient and effective FIDE really is.

It will generally be recognized that even Drawn Games can be fascinating. (I personally consider some of my draws brilliant successes 🙂 )
