I don’t think anyone is missing that issue, it’s just that we have no basis upon which to make any kind of determination as to who will have the happier life.

Karjakin obviously. Carlsen is a patzer who just gets by with the media for his good looks. However, real chess is decided over the board and not in the media. All it takes is one look at the rating list to see how over rated Carlsen is where Karjakin really struggles with his chess like a true master.

fischer as you can see was 125 elo points better than number 2 in the world. this would mean carelson would need to be aorund 2925 elo . when carelson breaks 2900 elo ill beging to compare him to fischer . until then hes not even close. in fact no time ever did kasparov approach a 125 elo gap between him and everyone else. since the only accurate way to measure a person strength is against his competition i will conslude that in the modern era fischer was the best. there can be no question. any comparisons are ridiculous and shouldn’t be taken seriously.
It’s strange that certain individuals are developing a simple-minded view that Carlsen is a patzer or somehow lucky. Some people claimed this after his recent win over Shirov at Aerosvit. I think Carlsen has a greater will to win (right now at least), but it is clear that Karjakin has the edge in theory. Mig pointed out on Daily Dirt that it seems like Karjakin consistently discovers novelties, esp. late in the opening. A match between these two would be the ideal way to settle the question, though.

Sooner or later the lucky streak will be broken and his true lack of talent will show through, until then we can only bide our time with this pretender.

You don’t play chess, do you? If you did, you’d know that chess is a game of skill with very little luck involved.
Sure, your opponent can blunder once and give you a free win. But Carlsen’s string of incredible results show without a doubt that he is WAY more than lucky. He’s actually pretty amazing in the way he manages to get winning advantages in drawish positions against the world elite.
Magnus will be King. He’s well on his way already.

And, for “The best”, you have the answer : A computer (which one, that’s another question).
Carlsen is already the “big show” right now. Anybody with a different view is just envious or knows nothing about chess.
It’s good for chess to have a new superstar like Fischer and Kasparow.
