No such thing as “the” strongest player. There may be 10 players who are a class above the rest, but among them, no one is “the” best. Performance peaks and dips from time to time. Look at Shirov and Ivanchuk – seemingly unbeatable in one tournament, then struggling like drunks in the next. Only performance counts, so there’s no sense in labeling anybody as “the” strongest.

The strongest player is the one who can lift more than 100kg without sweating. The most knowledgeable player is the one who went through the Russian Chess Schooling. The best player is the most lucky one – the world champ.

When it comes to answering such questions, going by facts (than feelings, imaginations, opinions) makes sense.

Anand has won every major tournament on the planet. Period. He is the reigning champion and has had the better of all players mentioned in the list.

Above all, what makes Anand great is his humility, his gentleman’s approach to the game. Very graceful.

Carlsen is a future candidate for the same position.
