Youth chess tourney draws record numbers

Kings, queens and knights all fell Saturday in joyful battle between hundreds of youngsters competing at Paul Brown Stadium in the city’s largest youth chess tournament.
The 10th annual Queen City Classic drew a record 700 participants from throughout region, and the Midwest, ranging from kindergarten to college age fans of chess.
More than 150 finished the all-day tournament with trophies, awarded Saturday evening.
And everyone came away with a participating medal, lunch and a T-shirt, said Maggie Fennell, director of the Cris Collinsworth Pro Scan Fund, which sponsored the event.
“It was awesome. We were at max capacity,” said Fennell. “Chess tournaments like this really promote learning. It is unbelievable to see how chess challenges the mind of these young people and enhances their critical thinking skills.”
Cincinnati Country Day School senior Cody Pomeranz of Indian Hill said tournament’s atmosphere was great.”
It was chess, chess, chess with everyone from every possible background gathering around together to play,” he said.
