      A Silent But Fierce Competition

      Binghamton, Scholastic chess

      A Silent But Fierce Competition

Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) – Cordisco’s Corner Store was quiet this morning…

But students were fiercely competing inside.

It’s part of the first annual Broome County Scholastic Chess Championship.

Students competed in five rounds for the grand prize…

And while it wasn’t much, it was the love of the game that brought people out.

The owner of the store is hoping the scholastic tournament will encourage young people to pick up the game and compete.

“Once you get the Chess bug like I had, even though I gave it up for twenty years, it came right back. Once you have it, you never get rid of it. It’s a bug you’ll always have. So I’m hoping to do that with the younger people, that way over time the community stays built up and starts to increase,” said store owner John Cordisco.

Cordisco’s store holds chess tournaments on Sundays once per month.

The Broome County Tournament is held in January.
