White clears out Black’s defensive pawns with

        1. Rxg6+ fxg6
        2. Qxg6+ Kh8
        3. Qxh6+ Kg8
        4. Qe6+ & 5. Qxc8.

By the way, Susan: Thanks for the link to Dick Cavett’s story. There is so much about Bobby we should remember, good and bad, and so little that any of us could explain, good and bad. What could have been done to make the end better? I don’t know. As Cavett said, who knows if any effort could have helped, but I know that our decision to help someone or not should be based less on the predictable outcome and more on the idea that helping is the right thing to do.

jcheyne is correct, except instead of taking the rook, one might consider just taking the pawn with the bishop on move 5 if that means the king is put in check on that move, since then white will exchange the bishop with his knight and still give white the opportunity to take the rook. Then it’s a queen and three pawns versus a queen and one pawn.

Oops, of course I meant that black, not white, will exchange the bishop with his knight.

Well, I agree with Jcheyne on the first move but i think white coukd do better with 4.Qg6, 5.Qxf6,6.Qe6+ & 7.Bxe5+ where white’s kings side pawn are unstoppable….

        1.Rg6+

        And black has three choices

        a)1………..Kf8
        2.Bc4+ Ke8 (2…Nd6 3.Bxd6+ wins of course)
        3.Rg8+ Kd7
        4.Qf5+ Kc7
        5.QxR+ wins

        b)1…….Kh8
        2.Bxe5+ mates

        c)1……………fxR
        2.Qxg6+ Kh8 (2…Kf8 3.Bc4+ wins)
        3.Qxh6+ Kg8
        4.Qg6+ Kh8
        5Qxf6+ Kg8 [5…..Kh7 6.Qf5+ Kg7 7.Bxe5+! NxB 8.QxB+ Kf7 9.Qf5+ Kg7 10.QxR +- ]
        6.Qe6+ Kg7
        7.Bxe5+! NxB
        (7….Kh7 8.QxR NxB 9.Qc7+ Qd7 10.QxN and white is clearly winning)
8.QxN+ Kf7 (or any other square)
        9.QxR +-
