Pawn threatens Bishop. That might be one of the scenarios at the Illinois High School Association Chess State Tournament this weekend at the Civic Center in Peoria.
145 teams from throughout the state are protecting their kings from their opponents. In each round, the teams will be paired off, and 480 chess games will be played simultaneously.
Chess Grand Master Yury Shulman is also on hand offering encouragement and advice.
Local high schools in the competition include Peoria Notre Dame, Richwoods, Woodruff, Galva Princeville.
