Discussions about Scholastic Chess in Chicago

      Chicago, scholastic

I run the www.chess4chicago.com website and I’m hoping that your blog can give attention to some of these problems that are in the Chicago Public Schools regarding chess.

      The blog posts are: http://blog.chess4chicago.com/2007/03/tom_larson_cps_.html

      And http://blog.chess4chicago.com/2007/03/chicago_public_.html

There is also a forum thread here: http://www.chess4chicago.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27

Many of us is the Chicagoland area saw this train wreck of an event coming.

The thing is, it could have been avoided altogether if Calvin Davis, the Director of Sports Adminstration at the Chicago Public Schools had heeded my public request (as well as many private ones) to reschedule the event so that it did not directly conflict with the K-8 Scholastic Championship being held in Normal, Illinois at the same time. See http://chessdad64.journalspace.c…om/? entryid=248.

Apparently, Mr. Davis’ arrogance or simple disregard for the kids at the CPS who want to play competitive chess prevailed. The rest is history.

I just posted some new information that contradicts Larson’s claim that he only invited 2 schools. Please read the report again the 2nd link in the article.

I get the idea that the person in charge of this at the Chicago Schools didn’t care too much about chess. Just thought it was some side affair – unimportant

The important attributes of this story is: 1) lack of invitations; 2) lack of officials; and 3) scheduling conflict.

        That’s a lot.
