      Chess match, Chess rivalries

Tennis had McEnroe – Borg and McEnroe – Connors.
Basketball had Magic – Bird and Chamberlain – Russell.
Chess had Fischer – Spassky and Kasparov – Karpov.

Which current two players would you most like to see in a match? Anand, Topalov, Aronian, Carlsen, Kramnik, Morozevich, Leko, Ivanchuk, or someone else?

I like to see Nakamura vs his alter ego.

Topalov – Morozevich looks like the most attractive, or possibly Carlsen – Morozevich (provided Morozevich is actually playing at his best).

But I guess the closest chess has to those legendary “duels” at the moment is the upcoming Topalov – Anand match…

Anand – Carlsen will be exciting.

Can’t imagine a rivarly in current times without Anand!

Maybe Shirov – Kramnik would be great.

Topalov – Kramnik would also be great.

With Nigel Short’s steady play, a match with Kamsky might settle some things between them.

Mamedyarov – Kurnosov is another exciting one.

Klitscko – Lewis can be a side event too.

        Anand-Kramnik, for sure.
I think Anand is much better than Topalov, despite the current ratings gap. Although he would not say so himself, Kramnik’s lower ranking these days is due to his illness and the medications he takes. If his condition is good, I think he is the best challenger for Anand.

The upcoming Anand – Topalov is very good, but I’d like to see Ivanchuk playing for WC title.

        Anand – Topalov today

Aronian – Carlsen in three years

I’d like to see Ivanchuk vs. anybody in the top. At least 12 games. Chukky can’t have too many years left in the elite and he hasn’t had much chance to show his mettle in a real match. I’m excluding from that category two-game nerve-fests.

Certainly I’d like to see either of the Polgar sisters take on Koneru or Hou Yifan,

Don’t forget Spassky – Petrosian which through the 1960’s was actually the big rivalry.

        Fischer – Spassky???

        Bleh. That was no rivalry.

Greatest rivalry was Kasparov-Karpov, fllowed by Karpov-Korchnoi and Alekhine-Capablanca.

Probably Alekhine and Capablanca were the biggest rivals ever – first Capablanca avoiding to play a world championship match against Alekhine, and then Alekhine avoiding to play Capablanca at all.

Topalov-Carlsen. Uncompromising, aggressive chess from both.

Krush-Zatonskih. In an iron cage. With baseball bats. Or maybe pillows instead… 😀
