Garry Kasparov – Crushing The Queen’s Indian Defense
Posted on March 26, 2012 by William in All Articles w/ Videos, Chess Openings, Strategy & Game Review

Garry Kasparov vs Lajos Portisch, Niksic 1983 Kasparov employed the Kasparov-Petrosian Variation with 5. a3 against Portisch’s Queen’s Indiand Defense. Kasparov built the tension with 13. Qe2 and 14. Rad1 before committing his pawn structure with 15. c4!? – an extremely active move that opened his dark-squared bishop on b2 at the cost of loosening the white pawns in the center. Kasparov continued with 17. d5!, seizing the initiative and powerfully opening the position for […]

Pawns Adventures Episode 4: No Levers, No Attack!
Posted on March 25, 2012 by iPlayooChess in Beginner’s Corner, Classic Games (Pre 2010), General Chess Articles, Strategy & Game Review

We already know that the pawns are the main actors in the game of chess. Don’t underestimate these deceptively weak soldiers. Without pawns there would be no game. They give life to pieces and at the same time form the backbone giving strength to the entire position. Remember Bronstein, “Without pawns, how can there be any strategy, any creative, far-reaching plans, any defensive fortifications or mobile pawn ranks for offensive aims!” In the previous post […]

      Applying Poker Psychology to Chess
Posted on March 24, 2012 by William in General Chess Articles

As a serious chess player with an undergrad degree in psychology that has also played a lot of poker, I’ve spent a lot of time contemplating the parallels between psychology in poker and chess. I consider poker to be very similar to chess, the only real difference being luck. There is absolutely no element of luck in chess, there is only good moves. After someone loses and they say the opponent got lucky, what they […]

Chess for Beginners: How to Design an Opening Repertoire
Posted on March 23, 2012 by William in Beginner’s Corner, General Chess Articles

When I start a chess class with a new student, I like to get some background on exactly who/what I’m dealing with. After the introductory pleasantries, I like to get down to business and inquire about the new student’s preferred openings. I really start to kick off the online chess lesson with a question like “So do you like to play a select, small number of openings or really more just whatever you feel like […]

I like Korchnoi’s style better. He once defeated Anatoly Karpov in 1974 Moscow Olympics.
