      CHS Chess takes third in tough league

      Creswell High School’s varsity chess team hopes to finish third for the second straight year in the competitive Midwestern League, in which Creswell competes against two 4A and four 5A schools.

      Midwestern League teams include 5A Willamette, Sheldon, Springfield and Churchill, as well as 4A Pleasant Hill and Marist and 3A Creswell.

      Creswell, third with a 4-2 record behind first-place Pleasant Hill (6-0) and second-place Willamette (5-1) when the season ended on Jan. 23, defeated sixth-place Springfield (1-5), 4-1, at Lane Community College on Jan. 30 in the first round of the three-week league tournament.

      First-board player Rex Henzie, second-board player Jeremy Cordon, fourth-board player Mirkan Schoolcraft and fifth-board player Dustin Michael all won their first-round matches against Springfield.
