      Chess tournament, Guernsey

Top two seeds held to shock draws
      Wednesday 24th October 2012, 2:29PM BST.

DAY three of the Intertrust Guernsey International Chess Festival brought the first major surprises of the week, as the two top-seeded grandmasters were held to draws by opponents from outside the elite tier of the game.

On board one, international master Maxence Godard recorded a shock draw against the six-times former winner and top seed Tiger Hillarp-Persson, an achievement made all the more impressive by the fact that Godard had the disadvantage of playing with the black pieces.

Meanwhile on board two, the prodigiously talented amateur Wolfgang Mack emerged with an equally unexpected half-point from his battle with Marc Narciso, overcoming a gulf between the two players’ gradings in excess of 250 points.

Grandmasters Mark Hebden and Raj Tischbierek – along with international master Jovanka Houska – had a calmer passage through round three and this trio now stand alone at the top of the leader board.
