I wonder how they manage to play with such an awkward position of the board. One can imagine them tilting their heads sideways now and then as they play. Maybe they should get solid pieces instead…

From the looks of it, White is dead lost. I don’t recall if medieval chess had pawn-promotion rules. I’ll have to dig up my copy of Gollon.
Like the chess diagram icon set named “Handy Symmato”, this set of icons has a 180 degree rotational difference between the White vs. Black pieces.
